I find it amazing that there are so many festivals, events, art installations and charity events throughout the world that feature the humble umbrella, and the city of Solo (also known as Surakarta) in Central Java, Indonesia holds an amazing festival to celebrate and preserve the traditional Indonesian umbrella.
Thousands of visitors flocked to the third Indonesian Umbrella Festival, which was held from 23rd-25th of September, just to see the stunning array of colourful umbrellas which were displayed in each corner of Taman Balekambang, which once was the royal park of the Javanese monarchy, in the heart of the city.
16 other Indonesian cities from Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi and Bali were also invited to participate as display their own unique traditional umbrellas. This year they were also joined by representatives from Japan, Thailand, Brunei, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Mexico and Germany.
